What is Pension Credit?

Pension Credit is a tax-free payment that is calculated based on your income. If you have a partner, your income is calculated together. Pension Credit tops up your weekly income to £218.15 if you’re single, or £332.95 for couples.

You can get Pension Credit if you:

  • have reached Pension Credit qualifying age, which is State Pension age
    • The State Pension age is 66. You can find out more about State Pension age on the government website
  • live in Great Britain

You may still get Pension Credit if you:

  • have not paid National Insurance contributions
  • have some savings or a small pension
    • the first £10,000 of savings is ignored, so if you have been turned down before because of the amount of your savings, it’s worth another check
  • live with your grown-up family
  • own your own home

If you are eligible for Pension Credit, you may be able to access more support, such as:

  • housing benefit
  • mortgage interest
  • council tax support
  • a free TV licence (over 75's)
  • NHS dental treatment and glasses
  • transport costs for hospital appointments
  • heating costs including the Winter Fuel Allowance

Visit the government website to find out more about how to claim Pension Credit.
