Wakefield City Centre Conservation Area Review - Public Consultation

The council has reviewed the existing Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Plans for three conservation areas in Wakefield City Centre. This was prompted by a review of the Upper Westgate Conservation Area as part of the High Street Heritage Action Zone, part-funded by Historic England.

The appraisals for the other conservation areas in the city centre are the same age, so it is appropriate to review these documents at the same time.

In addition, we have produced a new appraisal for the Wood Street Conservation Area. This area does not have an adopted appraisal. We propose to amend the boundary of the conservation area and we also wish to consult on this at the same time. A management plan will be written for the Wood Street Conservation Area once the appraisal and boundary review have been completed.

An appraisal helps residents, business owners, developers, and the public understand the significance of the area. It will ensure its special interest and character is preserved and enhanced for future generations, and will:

  • assist in defining what is of 'special' architectural or historic importance
  • give recommendations on features and characteristics that should be protected
  • identify possible areas for future enhancement within the designated area
  • provide guidance on the form, style and location of future change and development within the designated area

We want to hear what you think about the documents. Please help us ensure they can be as useable as possible for the widest range of people.

We’ll also be holding a public meeting where you can find out more and chat to us. This will be held at Wakefield Town Hall, 4pm to 5pm on Tuesday 19 November 2024.
