Waste Management Contract

In 2013 we signed a 25-year contract with Shanks Waste Management (now Renewi UK Services Ltd) that is revolutionising the way that waste is managed in the district.

The contract comes after we successfully secured government support through the waste Private Finance Initiative (PFI) including a grant for £33 million from DEFRA.

This means that we are able to fulfil the requirements of our approved Municipal Waste Management Strategy, save money, increase recycling across the district and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill. 

From 25 February 2013, the contractor began operating waste management services previously provided by the Council. In 2015 we built new state-of-the-art facilities, closed some of the older sites and created a number of improvements to the Household Waste Recycling Centres such as increased opening hours, increased staffing levels and new signage has been installed at the facilities.

The new waste treatment facilities in South Kirkby are helping to increase recycling, reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill, help generate green sustainable energy, and have created jobs for local people.

The Council continue to manage the collection of household waste and recycling and manage bulky waste collections, medical waste and commercial waste services.
