Reporting an accident

The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 requires employers to report specific accidents, injuries, diseases, and dangerous incidents.

These include:

• Work-related deaths of workers and non-workers, excluding suicides or self-inflicted harm
  
  
• Specified injuries to workers, such as fractures, amputations, permanent loss of sight, severe crush injuries, or serious burns
  
  
• Over 7-day injury
  • Where an employee cannot carry out their normal duties for more than 7 consecutive days following an injury at work
    
    
• Injury to a non-employee/ member of public
  • This is if in connection with a work activity and taken directly to hospital
    
    
• Reportable dangerous occurrence
  • This includes the collapse
    
    • Overturning or failure of load-bearing parts of lifts and lifting equipment
    • Plant or equipment coming into contact with overhead power lines
    • Explosions or fires causing work to be stopped for more than 24 hours
      
      
• Reportable occupational disease
  • This includes: 
    
    • Carpal tunnel syndrome
    • Occupational dermatitis
    • Hand-arm vibration syndrome
    • Occupational asthma
    • Tendonitis or tenosynovitis of the hand or forearm
    • Any occupational cancer
    • Any disease attributed to an occupational exposure to a biological agent

All incidents can be reported online at www.hse.gov.uk/riddor

You can report fatal and specified injuries by calling the Incident Contact Centre at 0845 300 9923. Their opening hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.
