Heritage

Sandal Castle

Wakefield district is rich in heritage. We know that heritage is important and relevant to everybody’s lives. Exploring our history helps to inspire our communities to know who they are and where they come from. We must ensure that our heritage passes on to future generations.

Our Heritage, Our Stories - A Heritage Framework for Wakefield District

In 2022-2023, we carried out extensive engagement led by our consultants Heritage Lincolnshire. We met with the local community, societies, councillors, council staff, and heritage sites.

Our Heritage, Our stories - A Heritage Framework for Wakefield District has developed from our engagement. It outlines our principles, themes, and objectives for heritage.

These themes and objectives will guide current and future heritage opportunities and projects. The Heritage Framework is for individuals, community groups, organisations, employees, and other stakeholders.

You can download the full version of the Heritage Framework. There is also a highlights version outlining the principles, themes and objectives:

Our Heritage, Our Stories Film

This film shows some of our wonderful heritage across the district. It highlights our communities leading and supporting on local heritage projects. The film also outlines Wakefield Council's ambitions for heritage, and plans for Our Heritage, Our Stories. This 2-year project is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Our Heritage, Our Stories is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to all National Lottery players.
