Our climate change action plan
The Council declared a climate emergency in May 2019 because we're feeling the impact of climate change on our health, wellbeing and economy – locally as well as globally.
We know carbon emissions are from human activities – like travel, industry, electricity generation, agriculture, and heating and powering our homes. Combined, they are causing an overall warming of our planet and increasing the frequency of extreme weather events. We've all seen the devastating consequences, like fires, drought and specifically flooding in our region.
We’ve pledged to become a carbon neutral council by 2030. This means having a net zero carbon footprint, and we aim to help the entire district achieve this goal too by 2038.
Our Climate Change Action Plan was approved by cabinet in September 2020. We’re building a dedicated climate change team and an extensive programme of work is well under way.
