Post-16 transport
The Local Authority’s Post-16 Transport Policy 2024/2025 for learners aged 16-18 and continuing learners in further education aged 19-24 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities has now been agreed.
Once a young person reaches 16 years of age, we do not have to provide assistance with transport. This applies if that young person chooses to remain in full time education after the age of 16.
The Post 16 Transport Policy is intended to provide clarity for parents/carers and young people facing a wide range of circumstances. It will make sure that young people with significant special educational needs and disabilities are appropriately supported.
We are clear that while we will help parents of young people aged 16+ with special educational needs and disabilities to get their children to college, where appropriate, it is the parent's responsibility to make sure their child attends college. This may involve parents being more involved in taking their child to college rather than them being transported in a taxi or minibus.
Wherever it is appropriate the young person will be encouraged to take part in a program of Independent Travel Training.
