Walking Groups

Group of people walking through a trail in the woods

Our Walking groups are free and inclusive to all ages and abilities. With over 25 walks across the Wakefield District each week, there are plenty of opportunities to take part.

Health Walking Groups

Our Health walks are regular short walks that last between 20 and 90 minutes. They are aimed at people of all abilities and fitness levels. Each walk is led by at least one trained walk leader.

Health walks are free and you don't need any fancy walking gear. Just wear sensible footwear and clothing suited to the weather conditions. All walks are non-smoking and please check before bringing along dogs.

Nordic Walking Groups

Nordic walking is an enjoyable fitness session for all ages and abilities. It's one of the best cardiovascular and toning exercises there is.

Nordic walking can be done anywhere – no need for hills, country paths, or even snow! Using the poles, you can tone the upper and lower body at the same time. You'll burn nearly twice as many calories as ordinary walking.

So come along to our FREE friendly groups for an enjoyable session to improve your health and fitness. Nordic walking poles are provided, and the walks are suitable for all ages and abilities. All you need is sensible footwear and outdoor clothing. Walks follow various routes and last approximately 1 hour.

Children over the age of 8 years are allowed on the Nordic walks but must be accompanied by a responsible adult and supervised at all times. Please note: Children's poles are not supplied at present.

Wakefield Walking Group

Wakefield Walking Club is a friendly and welcoming group for adults who enjoy walking and exploring the outdoors. Originally founded over 50 years ago, the club now offers a variety of walks to suit different abilities. Walks take place every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the year, usually starting at 10am, with an additional 5-mile evening walk on Mondays at 7pm during June and July.

Each walk is led by an experienced volunteer who knows the route and can offer guidance on what to wear and bring. Weekly walks range from 5 to 8 miles, which are considered easy, to more challenging 10 to 12-mile routes, depending on terrain and elevation.

There are also occasional longer, more strenuous hikes for those looking for an extra challenge. Membership costs just £5 per year (from 1 February 2025).
