Biffa becomes Wakefield’s new waste management partner

Thursday, October 10, 2024

This includes managing the district’s three household waste recycling centres, and local recycling bring sites. Biffa will also take up the reins delivering an educational programme to residents, community groups and schools, to help increase recycling rates.

“We’re pleased to be working with Biffa as our new waste management partner. I look forward to them supporting the district to increase recycling and play a key role in helping us reach our net zero ambition.

“This doesn’t affect bin collections, as that continues to be provided by the Council, so residents won’t see any changes. And our recycling sites will continue to operate as normal.”

The contract also includes running the waste treatment facility at South Kirkby, which deals with all the rubbish from households, including garden and recycling waste. And helps generate green, sustainable energy. It also manages similar commercial, industrial and institutional waste from across the district.

Biffa’s Chief Operating Officer, Resources and Energy, Mick Davis said: “We are excited to be welcoming our new colleagues and customers to Biffa. As a trusted provider of complex, waste treatment services to local governments, we are committed to a seamless transition and continuing to provide a high-quality service, while helping Wakefield Council to deliver their recycling and de-carbonisation ambitions.”
