Stay warm and well this winter

Wednesday, January 08, 2025

As the freezing cold temperatures continue, we’re here to help you stay safe, warm and well. As well as keep our roads moving.

An amber cold-health alert is still in place until Sunday.

Please help us by checking in on those who may need a little extra help, such as vulnerable or elderly neighbours, friends and family.

If you are worried about someone, please call our Social Care Direct on 0345 8 503 503.

Our Grit Team are continuing to go out regularly, keeping the main roads gritted and restocking grit bins. And huge thanks to our residents for helping to keep residential roads and pavements clear.

If you do go out, please wrap up and take care on icy surfaces.

And never be tempted to go on frozen water, such as lakes and ponds.

Our Welcome Spaces are also open in our libraries, family hubs and Help at the Hub venues. They provide a free, warm, safe place to enjoy a hot drink and company. You can find your local centre here www.wakefield.gov.uk/welcomespaces

Our emergency cold weather night shelter is also open during severe cold weather, from 8pm-8am at Wakefield Baptist Church. The shelter offers a warm evening meal, hot drinks and then breakfast the following morning. They have showering facilities, TV and a warm place to rest for the night for those in need. You can visit their Facebook page to check when they are open www.facebook.com/wakefieldbaptistchurchUK

If you are concerned about someone you’ve seen sleeping rough in Wakefield, you can alert our Rough Sleeper Outreach Service direct on 01924 385722.

And if you are struggling to keep your home warm because of energy debt, support is available. Not heating your home can increase your risk of becoming unwell and may lead to frozen pipes. Visit www.wakefield.gov.uk/HSF to find out more.

There is also lots of advice on our website to help you keep warm and well this winter, at www.wakefield.gov.uk/winter-health. Or for medical advice visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111.

We’ll also be continuing to post any updates and disruption to services during the cold snap on our Facebook page.
