Young carers

A young carer is someone under 18 years old who takes on physical, practical, or emotional responsibilities at home. They do this because someone in their family is ill, disabled, battling addiction, or has a mental health condition.

Wakefield Council has a Young Carers Team. They work in partnership with schools and partner agencies to support young carers and their families.

Young Carer Engagement Workers offer one to one support to young carers aged 5-18. They also deliver a variety of after-school groups for young carers.

(Please note that both primary and secondary groups are delivered across each of the different locality areas in the Wakefield district).

You can find details about young carers groups happening in your nearest youth or family hub from the 'what's on guides' on the Wakefield Families Together website. You can also find current updates on activities and groups happening in each hub from their individual Facebook pages.

If you don't see the support you're looking for on the Wakefield Families Together website please contact your nearest youth or family hub to connect with your local Young Carer Engagement Worker who can discuss this with you.

Young carers aged 18–25 years are known as young adult carers (YAC). Carers Wakefield and District provide specialist YAC support in Wakefield.
