How to pay your Council Tax
We offer a few ways to pay your Council Tax. Choose the method that suits you best.

Direct debit
Direct debit is the easiest, safest, and most secure way to pay your Council Tax. You can use this form to set up a new direct debit or change an existing direct debit. Your payment is automatically debited from your account each month You can pay over 10 months (April to January) or 12 months (April to March) You can choose to pay on either 1, 14, 16, 25 of the month or if you prefer weekly (Tues or Fri) or fortnightly (Tues or Fri)

Pay online
This secure online payment service lets you pay your Council bills using any debit card or some credit cards. The service is free of charge. Please allow up to four days for us to get the payment.
Council Tax summons
Please note if
a) You have received a summons
or
b) Your direct debit application relates to an old account or for a property you no longer live at
Then you cannot set up a direct debit online.
Instead please call 0345 8 504 504 lines are open 8:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
If neither of these options are suitable for you, download a Direct Debit form then complete and return it to us.
Other ways to pay
Pay by phone
Telephone payments can be made using most credit and debit cards, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Call 0345 603 1539 and follow the simple instructions.
Please ensure that you have your bill or payment reference to hand and credit/debit card ready.
Calls to this number will be charged at local rates.
Pay by standing order
A standing order gives an instruction to your bank to pay set amounts to us. You will need to instruct your bank or building society to make the necessary payments each time you receive a bill as the amount of each instalment and the reference number may change.
Your bank or building society will need the following details from you:
- your Council Tax payment account number (as shown on your bill)
- the amount you need to pay
- the date payments are to be made (please remember that the payment should reach us by the 1st of the month)
- our bank details:

Pay at a Post Office or by PayPoint
You can make a payment free of charge at any Post Office in the country. You can also pay at any outlet displaying the ‘PayPoint’ sign by using the barcode on your bill or a swipe card.
Tell them how much you want to pay, by cash or debit card only at PayPoint outlets, and hand over your payment and bill or swipe card.
Please check your receipt and keep it safe as it is proof of your payment.
Pay by post
Cheques should be crossed and made payable to Wakefield Council. Please write your payment reference number (as shown on your bill) and address on the back of your cheque and send it to us at:

Receipts are not issued for payment by cheque unless you have asked for one. Please do not send cash through the post. Post-dated cheques are not accepted. All monthly instalments are payable on the first of each month.
Ask for a copy of your bill - please note, this may take up to 10 days to arrive.
