Wakefield Mobile and Home Library Service Survey 2024
We need to change the way we operate our Mobile and Home Library Service. The funding we’re receiving from the Government isn’t keeping up with how much it costs to run the service. And the way people use the service has also been changing.
The Mobile Service has stops of 10 to 20 minutes across the district. These are in areas without a static branch library. People can come onto the vehicle and choose their own books.
To better reflect demand, one option is to close the Mobile Library Service. We would continue to deliver the Home Library Service. This service would take books to people’s homes who can’t visit a local library due to long-term illness or disability/mobility.
Another option is to run fewer mobile library stops. This would include places where a local library can’t be easily reached by foot, public transport or car.
You can help inform our decision by filling in the survey below. It won’t take long, but sharing your views will make a difference. The link to the survey is below please complete by Sunday 20 October 2024.
Our mobile library service provides a free library service to residents of the Wakefield District.
The mobile library is an easily accessible vehicle with a lift that can accommodate wheelchair users and those with mobility problems.
We provide
- Free library membership
- A range of materials for loan including:
- Fiction
- Non-fiction
- Large print
- Talking books for both adults and children
Where and when does the mobile library visit?
The mobile library currently follows a three-week schedule around the district for pre-arranged drop-offs only. If you would like to know where the mobile library stops near you, please contact the mobile library team. Details are at the bottom of this page.
We do our best to keep to the times but occasionally, due to unavoidable circumstances such as a vehicle breakdown or bad weather, a route or stop may have to be cancelled.
We always publish details of cancellations on the Wakefield Council website and where possible contact customers by telephone.
The Mobile Library in your own home - it’s free
If you, or someone you know, find it difficult to get to a local library then the home delivery service can bring books to you.
Who can use the service?
We deliver to anyone living in the Wakefield District who, due to long term illness or disability is unable to visit their local library or a mobile library stop.
Each month we will bring you a selection of materials to your home, all carefully chosen with you in mind. We will talk to you about your reading interests and select an assortment of books we think you’ll enjoy. These can be in a variety of formats including:
- Hardback
- Paperback
- Large print
- Books on CD and Cassette
You can also request books you particularly want to read and we will try and locate these from our other libraries - just ask the driver when they call.
