Welcome to Wakefield Libraries - fine free and no ID.

Read, learn, connect and relax in our welcoming libraries. With thousands of books to choose from, local history resources and more. You can access the internet for free. We have lots of free events, activities, learning opportunities. There is something for everyone. Anyone who lives, works, studies or visits the district can join the library. It's free to join, we are fine free and you don’t need ID, you can even access many of our services from home.

The first 'free' public library in Pontefract was built with money donated by the famous philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The Art Nouveau building was officially opened on 21 September 1905. The current library was opened in 1975. The old Carnegie library later became Pontefract Museum.

  • Access to a wide range of books and more for all ages
  • Large local history collection with 2 microform readers
  • Children's section from toddler to teenager
  • 31 computers with internet access - 13 for adults, 4 for teenagers, 2 for juniors. 12 computers in the Makery available for clubs and special events all with internet access. Pre booking is always advised.
  • Study space
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Printing, fax and scanning facilities
  • 6 Hublets - these are tables for general use with downloaded apps, i.e. PressReader, Good Reads, BBC News and more. Computers can be pre-booked in advance.
  • Self-service check-outs
  • Programme of weekly activities for all ages.

  • Accessible facilities, induction loop

  • Cycle parking available in close proximity, borrowable lock and mini repair kit onsite
