Park Rangers
The Wakefield Park Rangers maintain district and town parks to meet Green Flag standards.
Maintenance responsibilities
Litter
We empty bins and litter pick twice a week from March to October and as necessary during winter.
Grass cutting
We help to cut grass in high footfall areas such as around playgrounds and also assist with grass cutting in wider park.
Floral displays
We will maintain bedding and herbaceous plants if there are any.
Planting
We help plant trees in winter and create meadows and enhance existing natural areas for wildlife and flowers.
Ponds and water features
We do a weekly schedule of pond/water feature cleansing in the three destination parks:
- Thornes
- Pontefract
- Vale Head
Shrubs and hedges
We maintain shrub beds and hedges from August to March.
General maintenance
We also inspect, maintain, clean, and do minor repairs of park furniture each week such as:
- signs
- benches
- gates
- fences
We seek out and remove graffiti and report anti-social behaviour.
We perform small repairs and maintenance tasks like painting park buildings and pruning trees using hand tools from the ground.

We provide support and assistance for local parks volunteer initiatives. Contact us at Parksandgreenspaces@wakefield.gov.uk to request assistance with your project.
