What is neighbourhood planning?
The Localism Act 2011 introduced neighbourhood planning, giving local communities the power to shape the future of their areas. Led by town or parish councils or neighbourhood forums, these plans are influenced by sustainable development principles and guide local planning decisions. Following examination and a local referendum, approved plans become part of the statutory development plan in the district, facilitating development while protecting important spaces.

How do I get involved and what support is there?
To be involved in preparing a neighbourhood plan you must either live in an area where a town or parish council is seeking to prepare a plan or in an area where there is a designated neighbourhood forum.
We have prepared a Frequently Asked Questions document. This provides information on neighbourhood development plans and the process of preparing them.
