Shop Improvement Grant Scheme

What is this all about?

The Council has set aside funds from the Town Centre Regeneration Capital Fund to:

revitalise Ward 14's town centre
attract more people
enhance its appeal to residents and visitors

One initiative is the Shop Improvement Grant Scheme. This is designed to assist property owners and tenants in enhancing the appearance and quality of their shops. The grant can be used by new tenants to improve, refit, or refurbish vacant properties as well.

What does the scheme involve?

The Council aims to support local towns in meeting the needs of businesses and competing with external offers. To achieve this, businesses can apply for a grant that covers 80% of the cost of improvement works, with a maximum award of £10,000. The minimum award is £5,000 which equates to a grant of £4,000.

In 2022, 29 businesses in the ward expressed interest in improving their shop fronts. A Grants Panel has been formed to review applications. This is to make sure they align with the grant criteria and the vision for South Elmsall, South Kirkby, and Moorthorpe.

What is the process?

Stage 1: Applicants need to contact a member of the Southeast Regeneration Team for an initial project discussion. The officer will provide scheme guidance notes, schedule a meeting, and supply an Expression of Interest form.

Stage 2: If the proposal(s) meets the grant criteria, applicants will then be invited to submit a full application form. This will request information such as:

proof of ownership and/or occupation of the property
if works need any statutory consents
proof that the applicant’s contribution towards the cost of the works is secured
three quotes for the work to be undertaken

Stage 3: The Grant Panel will evaluate the full application and make a decision to approve, reject, or defer it. If approved, the applicant will receive a formal grant offer and will need to enter into a contract with Wakefield Council.
