Safe Zones

Safe Zones are places you can go if you need help when out and about in the district. If you feel unsafe, unwell or need help contacting a trusted friend or family member, staff are trained to help you.

Safe Zones are available for anyone, they are mostly open during the day but also may be open into the evening.

If you’re out and about at night and need support, Ask for Angela in a participating venue. Find them by downloading the WalkSafe App on your smartphone’s app store.

Safe Zones for people with long-term conditions

Safe Zones are also trained to help people with learning disabilities, autism and dementia. If you’re lost, confused, feel unwell or you are being bullied, visit a Safe Zone for help.

Some vulnerable people carry a “Safer Places” card. If you take one to a Safe Zone, someone that works there will help you call someone that supports you. You can then wait at the Safe Zone until they arrive.

Find a Safe Zone

You can find Safe Zones across the district. They include places like shopping centres, Council buildings, doctors’ surgeries and participating small businesses.

Become a Safe Zone or feature on the WalkSafe app

Interested in helping visitors and residents to the district to have confidence when they’re out and about? Become a Safe Zone for your community. If you become a Safe Zone your staff will be invited to attend the WalkSafe training.

Once completed your business will also be featured on the app as a trusted place of safety.

To be eligible, you need to:

be open to the public with appropriate public liability insurance
have reasonable opening hours throughout the day
have at least two members of staff at any time
be a safe place that is comfortable, welcoming and accessible to everyone

Apply to become a Safe Zone or to be on the WalkSafe app by contacting communitysafety@wakefield.gov.uk. If you’re successful, you’ll receive a training pack to help you support people that call into your location.
