Towns Deal
Key details
As part of our commitment to ensuring the long-term success of our City, the council has secured a £24.1m Town Deal from the Government's Towns Fund. This will be used to support a series of projects in Wakefield.
These projects will help deliver our City Centre Masterplan. This aims to rediscover Wakefield as a regional centre for creative industry.
With this plan we will
- build on the city’s arts and cultural heritage to attract new businesses and employment opportunities
- create new skills training opportunities
- deliver high quality environments for residents and visitors to enjoy
The goal of the Towns Fund is to deliver long term economic and productive growth through:
- urban regeneration, planning, and land use
- making sure Wakefield is a thriving place for people to live and work by attracting more people into our city centre
- strengthening local businesses and supporting our local heritage and culture
- identifying areas needing improvements and considering how we can deliver this through:
- site acquisition
- preparation
- remediation
- regeneration
- making full use of the planning system to support a positive strategic direction and provide effective changes
The Towns Fund prospectus details the guidelines set by Government for funding.
Our Town Deal programme will deliver four projects. These have been the subject of extensive public consultation since 2020. This has helped us to ensure they are the right choice for Wakefield. They've also been endorsed by our Wakefield High Streets Taskforce, which includes MP Simon Lightwood.
This is an exciting time for Wakefield as we are in the delivery phase of our Towns Deal projects. The major investment made possible by the Towns Deal will see our economy flourish and allow us to focus on regenerating our city centre. Projects include:
